Installing Ubuntu 11.4
Ubuntu is a Linux based open source operating system. Ubuntu springs from the Debian Linux distribution. Most people do not know that the name Ubuntu is a Southern African philosophy meaning “humanity towards other.”
Ubuntu comes in a home and server versions (64 or 32 bit). There are three main distribution that spring from the Ubuntu family and they are listed below:
- Ubuntu
- Xubuntu
- Kubuntu
We will be going over one way to install Ubuntu 11.4 server.
The installation of Ubuntu 11.4
Download your Ubuntu 11.4 server CD or DVD from: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/server/download
Boot the from the Ubuntu 11.4 CD-ROM. Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the CD.
First you will need to select a language.
When you get the Ubuntu boot screen pick “Install Ubuntu Server.”
Now you will need to Select the language again (Redundant if you ask me).
Next you will need to select your location
Next you can have Ubuntu auto select your keyboard. I normally just say no and select my keyboard myself.
Next you will need to enter your hostname. This is the name of the computer you will see on your network.
The next screen is the clock. Ubuntu normally gets the right time zone.
The Next screen you will setup your hard disk. The Default is “Guided – Use entire and set up LVM” If this is going to be the only system and you don't need an encrypted drive, then the default will do.
The partition selection is next. If you picked the default in the last step you should only have one partition.
Next you will need to say yes to allow Ubuntu to change your disk.
Now you need to tell Ubuntu how much disk space to use in the Partition disk section.
Say Yes to allow Ubuntu to change your disk.
Sit back and wait.
Enter the first username and password. You can use this site http://strongpasswordgenerator.com/ to generate a strong password.
You should now get an option to setup a http proxy so Ubuntu can download install packages.
Next is the auto updates. I normally set security update to run automatic. Some companies will have an issue with auto installation of updates.
Next you will have an option to install some servers. I normally opt out of this because I like to do this by hand. I will post articles soon how this is done. This is just a base install for now.
Now you should see an option to configure GRUB. You should install GRUB. This is the boot menu for Linux.
You should see a Finish screen.
